5 Steps to Get Your $500 ADS-B Rebate

The rebate program is available until all are claimed or by October 11, 2019. Only those who have not equipped their aircraft with ADS-B Out are eligible.

There are five steps aircraft owners should follow to meet the mandate and receive their $500 rebate:

  1. Purchase the equipment and schedule installation
    • Is your aircraft registered and updated on the FAA website?
    • Talk to an Authorized Appareo Dealer to find out which Stratus transponder is the best ABS-B Out option for you. Your installer may also recommend that you consider ADS-B In options, like a Stratus receiver, to maximize all of the benefits of ADS-B weather and traffic.
  2. Obtain a Rebate Reservation Code by reserving a position online
    • Within the 90-day period of your ADS-B Out install, reserve your $500 Rebate.
    • All boxes must be checked on the Rebate page to request a reservation.
  3. Install the equipment
    • Follow the FAA’s installation policy
    • As stated in the FAA Mandate requirements, your aircraft must be equipped with aTSO-certified Version 2 ADS-B Out transmitter and a compatible WAAS GPS position source.
    • There are two types of ADS-B systems available:
        • Mode S transponder with Extended Squitter, referred to as 1090ES, which meet the performance requirements of Technical Standard Order TSO-C166b. Stratus Transponders qualify as a 1090 ES ADS-B Solution.
        • Universal Access Transceiver (UAT) that meets the performance requirements of TSO-C154c. UAT receives weather data provided by the FAA ADS-B network and operates on 978 MHz. Most UAT options reuse your existing old transponder though, which may still use outdated vacuum-tube technology and need to be replaced. 
  4. Conduct the required equipment performance validation and get an Incentive Code
    • After your ADS-B Out Solution is installed you have 60 days to submit a Public ADS-B Performance Report Request. This request validates your equipment performance with the FAA. After you’ve completed the test you’ll receive an incentive code.
    • According to the FAA, “for best results, ADS-B validation flights should be conducted within published areas of FAA ADS-B Coverage. Flying near the surface or at the fringe of ADS-B coverage areas may negatively impact the metrics provided in your PAPR Report. Please refer to the FAA ADS-B Coverage Map before flying.”

AgViews: Future of Farming Grounded in Technology

Our founder Barry Batcheller and CEO David Batcheller were recently interviewed for Bell Bank’s Agribusiness Newsletter AgViews to offer their perspectives on the future of farming, the latest in precision agriculture, and Appareo’s partnership with AGCO, a joint venture called Intelligent Ag Solutions.

Below is a sampling of the Q&A from the AgViews interview:

What has been the biggest advancement in ag technology in the last five years?

Barry: I would say it’s been the translation into precision farming that is bringing a new level of productivity to farmers.

The advancements in agriculture that have happened over the last 50 years – plus additional advancements – will be required to feed the predicted global population of about 9.6 billion by 2050. If we continue at the level of productivity we have today, we’d fall short in feeding the planet by about 50 percent. So we need increasing advancements in agriculture if we’re going to feed this planet.

David: Precision protein is going to be an emerging part of agriculture. The poultry industry, for example, has refined making chicken to where producers can go from chick to chicken with shocking speed. I think we’re going to see, in pork and even beef production, more drive toward precision production to cater to the public’s interest in high-quality, low-cost meat protein.

What are some of your more popular products?

David: On the Intelligent Ag side of the business, we make a popular monitoring system for air drills called Recon Wireless Blockage and Flow Monitor. If you seed soybeans or plant wheat, canola or barley, and you have a monitoring system, there’s a reasonable probability that you’re running our monitor.

For people who buy and use AGCO equipment, things like RoGators, TerraGators, Massey Ferguson, Gleaner combines or Challenger tractors, we do the telematics products for those machines. AGCO launched a new combine last year, called the IDEAL combine. We developed all of the automation and sensors for that.

We also developed an aftermarket section control product for John Deere Air Carts called Engage Zone Control. It communicates with an air seeder’s GPS mapping system to boost yield and reduce inputs. A lot of growers are benefiting from it.

What advantages does an independent company like Appareo have over larger manufacturers?

David: We and others have done a nice job of building new businesses and opportunities around getting more out of a piece of equipment you have rather than replacing that piece of equipment. When those trends really start to take, then the manufacturers look to incorporate that capability onto the machine from the factory. There’s a lot of innovation coming in the aftermarket, and rather than being a little bolt-on capability, it’s getting deeper into the machine.

FAA Relaunches $500 ADS-B Rebate Program

FAA Relaunches Rebate Program

Last week, the FAA announced that it’s relaunching the $500 ADS-B Rebate Program effective immediately through October 11, 2019, or until the allocated funds are used. According to the FAA, they are making $4,900,000 available under the rebate program, which will fund 9,792 ADS-B Out installations.

Per the ADS-B mandate, as of January 1, 2020, aircraft flying in most controlled airspaces, and where a transponder is necessary, will be required to be equipped with compliant ADS-B Out technology.

The previous FAA rebate program that ran for a year from September 2016 to 2017, issued more than 10,000 rebate payments.

As before, there are five steps aircraft owners should follow to meet the mandate and receive the $500 rebate (visit our blog to learn more about the steps):

  1. Purchase the equipment and schedule installation.
  2. Obtain a Rebate Reservation Code by reserving a position online.
  3. Install the equipment.
  4. Conduct the required equipment performance validation and get an Incentive Code.
  5. Claim the $500 rebate online using the Rebate Reservation Code and Incentive Code.

11 Consecutive Beechjet G5000 Installations by Clemens Aircraft

Clemens Aircraft, a fleet management company located in Benton, Kansas, is nearing completion of their 11th G5000 integrated flight deck upgrade within its managed fleet of Beechjet 400A/Hawker 400XP aircraft. They have completed a comprehensive upgrade for each Beechjet that includes the G5000 integrated flight deck, winglets, as well as new paint and interior.

Two touchscreen display/controllers serve as the primary crew interface for the system, offering an intuitive graphical menu to simplify cockpit tasks.

With the G5000 upgrade, the Beechjet 400A/Hawker 400XP receives a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) rule-compliant Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) Out solution. It also allows for access to more airports and lower minimums throughout the world through standard PBN/RNP 0.3, radius-to-fix (RF) legs support and LPV/APV approach capability. The G5000 upgrade provides operators with a platform positioned to take advantage of future global airspace modernization applications.

G1000 NXi Retrofit Programs Update

We have updated our portfolio of G1000 NXi integrated flight deck upgrades to include additional aircraft models. Aircraft currently eligible for the G1000 NXi upgrade include the Daher TBM 850/900 and King Air 200/300/350. Aircraft that will soon be eligible for this upgrade include the Cessna Citation Mustang, Embraer Phenom 100/300 and Piper M500. These aircraft owners and operators can easily upgrade from the G1000 to the G1000 NXi with minimal aircraft downtime and installation labor to receive a modern, state-of-the-art integrated flight deck with a wealth of additional capabilities.

Gulfstream G280 Gets Garmin ADS-B Solution

Gulfstream has selected a complete Garmin Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) In solution for new and existing G280 business jets. The solution features Garmin GDL 88 ADS-B datalink and Flight Stream 210 providing easy access to the benefits of ADS-B In traffic, which is correlated from multiple sources, and subscription-free Flight Information Service-Broadcast (FIS-B) weather. This ADS-B In solution also integrates with existing TCAS systems and cockpit displays to provide a cohesive and straightforward upgrade, reducing cost and streamlining the installation process.

Available as a forward-fit or retrofit ADS-B In solution, the GDL 88 and Flight Stream 210 offer Gulfstream G280 aircraft operators a simple path to receive ADS-B In. The Flight Stream 210 wireless gateway can connect via Bluetooth to up to two mobile devices simultaneously, while the GDL 88 receives data from nearby ADS-B ground stations and other aircraft on the ground and in-flight. Because the GDL 88 integrates with the aircraft’s existing GPS and AHRS, pilots can display GPS position data, including velocity, attitude and heading information, alongside ADS-B In traffic and weather utilizing the Garmin Pilot app on iOS or Android mobile devices.

Enhancing the traffic picture, patented TargetTrend and TerminalTraffic can also be viewed within Garmin Pilot. Because the GDL 88 is also dual-link, operators with this solution have the capability to see more aircraft – even those operating at small reliever airports where ADS-B ground stations may not be nearby. Aural traffic alerts are also available with this solution. The display of ADS-B In traffic and weather is also available within the FltPlan Go app, ForeFlight Mobile and Jeppesen Mobile FliteDeck.

Garmin Flight Stream 210.

In addition to displaying ADS-B In traffic and FIS-B weather, Garmin Pilot provides a comprehensive suite of tools and full-featured navigation for pilots around the globe on both iOS and Android mobile devices. A standalone electronic flight bag, Garmin Pilot also offers worldwide features such as European IFR autorouting and filing, access to Jeppesen charts, as well as Leidos Flight Service ICAO flight plan filing.

As part of this ADS-B In upgrade, Gulfstream G280 customers also receive a five-year subscription to Garmin Pilot U.S. IFR Premium. G5000 Upgrade Program for Citation Excel/XLS Certification Update

Our G5000 integrated flight deck program for Textron Aviation’s Citation Excel and Citation XLS is making rapid progress toward certification. The recent addition of a second aircraft will assist with certification efforts and expedite flight testing and development within the program. After quickly selling out the initial 25 delivery positions, we have created a second pre-STC incentive program to allow owners and operators the opportunity to lock in a 2019 delivery. The G5000 integrated avionics suite modernizes the cockpit, increases aircraft utility, addresses airspace modernization requirements, and solves concerns related to parts obsolescence.

“Based on the tremendous reception of our initial early adopter program, which has already sold out, we have now created a new program that allows customers to plan their 2019 installations. Our excitement to deliver a truly modernized integrated flight deck to these operators continues to grow as we near certification of the G5000 in the Citation Excel and XLS,” said Carl Wolf, Garmin vice president of aviation sales and marketing. “With the G5000, aircraft owners receive similar to what’s in a brand new aircraft – a zero-time avionics suite that yields a substantially lower cost of operation, while also solving a broad range of global airspace modernization initiatives and ongoing maintenance challenges.”

Cessna Citation XLS

Certification efforts continue in collaboration with Textron Aviation as functional testing of the system, software and hardware are in progress. Development flight testing is nearly complete with the final software that meets certification requirements. The recent addition of a second aircraft will further refine the field installation process and expedite certification of the G5000 in the Citation Excel/XLS.

“Development flight testing has progressed smoothly, as we have accumulated over 125 flight hours and thousands of hours in system development and ground testing,” said Grant Wittenborn, Garmin lead flight test pilot for the program. “The flight deck has really modernized the operational capabilities of this aircraft and we are excited to transition from development to certification.”

As the G5000 for the Citation Excel/XLS progresses toward certification in early 2019, the new incentive program provides up to 15 additional owners and/or operators with five years of comprehensive database coverage to those who place a firm commitment, offering a savings of nearly $25,000.

The G5000 integrated flight deck for the Citation Excel and Citation XLS features three landscape-oriented flight displays with multi-pane capability, allowing pilots to simultaneously view maps, charts, checklists, TAWS, TCAS, flight plan information, weather and more. Electronic charts and Garmin SafeTaxi airport diagrams are geo-referenced and can be viewed across all three displays. The G5000 flight deck for the Citation Excel/XLS is expected to provide a significant weight savings compared to the current system, allowing additional baggage, passenger and/or fuel load flexibility.

 

G5000 upgrade for Citation Excel/XLS

The G5000 installation on the Citation Excel/XLS includes a fully digital Automatic Flight Control System (AFCS), offering precise performance throughout the aircraft’s flight envelope. New to the Citation Excel, emergency descent mode is available as a standard feature within the G5000 and is enabled by the autopilot in the event of a loss in aircraft pressurization. Safety enhancing underspeed protection (USP) is an optional feature that allows the autopilot to assist with airspeed management, while also enabling fully coupled go-arounds, greatly reducing pilot workload.

With the G5000 upgrade, the Citation Excel/XLS receives a fully integrated, Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) rule-compliant Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) Out solution. Additionally, operators gain access to more airports and lower approach minimums throughout the world as the G5000 has PBN/RNP 0.3 with LPV/APV approach capability.

The G5000 integrated flight deck for the Citation Excel and XLS also supports additional options, such as:

  • SVT synthetic vision technology, which presents a 3D virtual depiction of terrain, obstacles, traffic and the runway environment.
  • SurfaceWatch, which supports visual and aural cues to help prevent pilots from taking off and landing on a taxiway, on a runway that is too short or on the wrong runway based on performance data entered during preflight.
  • Link 2000+ and CPDLC support for terminal and enroute FAA DataCom operations.
  • Datalink weather, including access to global weather products and text/voice communication through the Iridium satellite network.

As an additional option for this upgrade, Connext wireless cockpit connectivity via the Flight Stream 510, enables wireless flight plan transfer and more between compatible mobile devices, including Garmin Pilot, FltPlan Go and ForeFlight Mobile. Owners and operators can more easily manage flight plans with Flight Stream 510, while also receiving additional benefits such as the sharing of traffic, weather, GPS and more across multiple mobile devices in the cockpit. Flight Stream 510 also enables Database Concierge, the wireless transfer of aviation databases from the Garmin Pilot app on a mobile device to the G5000.

G700 TXi Flight Display for Part 23 Class IV and Part 25 Aircraft

We’re thrilled to announce the availability of the G700 TXi—a touchscreen flight display designed for Part 23 Class IV and Part 25 transport category aircraft. The initial Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) will be approved for select Cessna Citation II/SII and Citation V aircraft soon, is available from JETTECH and can be installed across the Garmin dealer network.

“The G700 TXi series has redefined aircraft and helicopter cockpits and we’re excited to extend this modern upgrade to now include this class of business aircraft,” said Carl Wolf, vice president of aviation marketing and sales. “The availability of the G700 TXi is a significant achievement for Garmin as this is the first public validation of the TXi series in this class of aircraft. This certification of the G700 TXi is comprised of a single or dual 10.6-inch flight display that boasts a bright, LCD touchscreen design and features dual concentric knobs for added convenience and versatility when interfacing with the system. Because the G700 TXi is paired with dual GTN 650/750 touchscreen navigators, pilots receive flight management system (FMS) functionality through an intuitive touchscreen interface. The G700 TXi also integrates seamlessly with these navigators, offering even more operational capability, including fully coupled LPV/WAAS approach guidance, as well as the option to display vertical navigation (VNAV) guidance to fly complex RNAV arrival procedures.

Using the latest display technologies, the G700 TXi system improves dispatch rates, reduces aircraft downtime, as well as overall life cycle costs. Garmin Pilot: FltPlan Integration and Features

We are excited to announce the initial phase of integration between the Garmin Pilot app and the popular FltPlan.com web portal. As a result of Garmin’s acquisition of FltPlan.com in August, we have made rapid progress in merging portfolios. Beginning next week, pilots will be able to use FltPlan.com for pre-flight planning and filing, and automatically view the same flight plan within the Garmin Pilot app on Apple mobile devices. This announcement represents the first of a series of cohesive enhancements between the FltPlan.com web portal and the Garmin product line.

FltPlan.com and Garmin Pilot customers can now experience a seamless transition between the FltPlan.com website and the Garmin Pilot application within the United States, Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, Central America, Venezuela and Columbia. The initial phase of this integration allows customers to create a flight plan on the FltPlan.com website and automatically view the same flight plan information within the Trip Planning section of the Garmin Pilot app.

Within the app, customers can also view recent and future trips that have been created on the website. Once the flight plan populates in the app, pilots can transfer it wirelessly to compatible Garmin avionics or a Garmin integrated flight deck. Additionally, the popular navigation log found on the FltPlan.com website can also be viewed within Garmin Pilot under the NavLog tab in Trip Planning.

Pilots can create a free FltPlan.com account to take advantage of web-based flight planning and flight management services, which includes access to weather, airport information, fuel prices, printable navigation logs, aircraft performance data and more.
